INFORMED CONSENT
Project Title:
The Relationship among
Social,
Emotional, Cultural, and Communicative Competence in
Predicting
Social Adaptability
of International College Students in the US
Investigator:
Hyeyoung Bang, School of Health
& Educational Psychology, College of Education, Oklahoma
State University
Purpose:
The ultimate goal of the
study is to investigate international students’
social,
emotional, communicative, and cultural competence
as a means to predict social adaptability.
Procedures:
You will be given the Informed
Consent Form in the first page of the
online Experimetrix research pool (http://www.experimetrix2.com/okstate).
Once they agree to participate by clicking (which will
be collected and stored separately from any research
data), you will be able to access one hundred
self-assessment statements which have been created using
the 5-Likert scale (1 = the least like me to 5 = the
most like me). You will also be asked to respond to a
demographic survey that asks questions regarding your
gender, age, nationality, TOEFL score, GPA, self-check
social adaptability, and open-end questions. All
documents will be protected and kept in a disk and
locked cabinet for five years and then will be
destroyed.
Risks of Participation:
There are no known risks
associated with this project which are greater than
those ordinarily encountered in daily life.
Benefits:
It is hoped that the study
will help
psychologists to understand international students’
competences and how their competences predict cultural
and social success. It is also anticipated that the
study help international students optimize their
intrapersonal emotional well-being by enhancing
interpersonal supports in their environments. These
findings could have implications for
counselors, psychologist, and
higher educators.
Confidentiality:
Your responses to both the
self-assessment
and demographic surveys
are confidential. No names or other identifying
information will be attached to your packet and only
aggregate data will be reported.
The data will be securely stored in a locked file
cabinet in the researcher’s office. The paper copies
will be destroyed one year after the completion of the
study. Only the researchers will have access to the
information that is stored on a computer disk without
any identifying information and it will be destroyed
five years from completion of the study.
The
OSU IRB has the authority to inspect consent records and
data files to assure compliance with approved
procedures.
